Weather
July is the hottest month for Antelope Canyon visitors.
Early mornings can start around 70°F (21°C), and afternoons often soar to 95°F (35°C) or even higher (above 100°F).
Remember, inside the canyon, it’s about 10°F (5–6°C) cooler, providing some relief from the heat.
Most of our visitors say that they didn’t mind the intense heat during this time because of two things:
- The air-conditioned bus/van (the ride to the canyon)
- The fact that it’s definitely cooler inside the canyon
Rain: July is the start of the monsoon season. This means there’s a chance of afternoon thunderstorms and even flash floods. Check the weather forecast and check your emails regularly the days before.
Good to know: “Be prepared when visiting in July or August. The canyon was created by a river that can flood after heavy rain. Watch the weather and plan accordingly. The operator will cancel a tour if flash floods are in the forecast.”
You will be informed via email or text ahead of time. The tour operators are very reliable and will let you know as early as possible.
Weather reports and testimonials from our visitors:
“The natural beauty of the canyon was breathtaking. The weather in July was hot, and the climb back to the starting point was brutal for us old ladies. We are not used to hiking in 100°F temps. However, the canyon itself wasn’t that hot compared to outside, so the tour was enjoyable despite the July heat.”
“Our 3:15 tour in July didn’t have the best conditions (no light beams), but it was still a beautiful time. However, we had a couple of afternoon weather conditions (high winds and threatening “monsoon” rain) that could have impacted the tour.”
“We think July is an awesome month for a visit. Yes, it’s hot, and there can be issues with the weather, but the beautiful light beams during this time, it’s indeed one of the best months, make up for this. Some people are disappointed because of the crowds and the ‘rushed tours’. But we can assure you that the guides do everything they can to make your visit an extraordinary experience, even during this busy time.”
Tours in July | Time Slots
All tour companies for both Upper and Lower Antelope Canyon are offering their tours in July. However, keep in mind that it’s a busy month. That’s why we recommend that you book as early as possible to secure your preferred time slot.
Tours are especially busy and crowded between 11 am and 1:30 PM when the light beams appear. They are also the first ones that are sold out.
💡 You cannot visit the Canyon on your own! Booking a guided tour is necessary for both Upper and Lower Antelope Canyon since the region is located on Navajo land. Please don’t just drive to Antelope Canyon/Page without having booked a tour first!
Visitor Testimonial
“Our tour operator used air-conditioned soft-ride vans, which made the 15-minute drive out to the slot canyon much more comfortable and fun while driving through the washout area.
Overall, our tour was awesome. Just keep in mind that bags aren’t allowed, so be prepared to carry your phone, keys, and other belongings in your pockets. While it was quite hot outside in July, the canyon itself was more pleasant temperature-wise. Please wear shoes you don’t mind getting covered in dirt!”
Upper vs. Lower Antelope Canyon
- Upper Antelope Canyon: Known for its easy, mostly flat terrain and spectacular light beams, Upper Antelope Canyon is the top choice for many visitors. In July, the beams are at their strongest and most stunning, offering one of the best photo opportunities of the year.
- Lower Antelope Canyon: Without the iconic light beams, this canyon is also more challenging. The reason for that is the stairs/ladders and the narrow passages. Some light beams can happen here, but not as intense and often as in Upper Antelope. Still, you can enjoy beautiful colors and sometimes a less busy experience.
The Light Beams
Is July really such a great time to spot the light beams? Absolutely! The sunbeams are at their absolute best during June, July, and August. By July, the sun is very high in the sky, creating long, bright shafts of light that dance along the canyon walls. We can assure you that July offers some of the most breathtaking light beams during the whole season.
Another Testimonial
“My son and I made a special time together and booked the Upper Canyon tour. It was a spectacular experience. Our guide was not only extremely friendly and knowledgeable, he was also a humble and kind person. He helped all seven of us with setting our phone photos to be perfect.”
Time of Day to See the Beams
The light beams are visible between 11 AM and 1:30 PM in Upper Antelope Canyon. If it’s overcast and very cloudy, you cannot see the beams. To have the best chance of seeing the beams, book a tour around 10:30 AM, 11:00 AM, or 12:00 PM. During this time, the sun is at its highest.
Crowds
July is peak season here, so expect the canyon to be very busy. This is especially important during the light beam times (see above). If you prefer fewer crowds, we recommend visiting early in the morning or later in the afternoon. Again, you’ll miss the prime light beams during these times.
What to Wear
Put on sturdy walking shoes or sneakers for the sandy canyon floor. Oh, and yes, the shoes will be dirty afterward. Please wear light and breathable outfits and pack a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen, as the sun is especially intense during July. Bringing water is also essential as staying hydrated is critical, especially if you’re going during midday or early afternoon when temperatures are at their highest.
